On 25 September 2015 the Social Justice Coalition (SJC) and Ndifuna Ukwazi (NU) received a reply from the Minister of Police’s Chief of Staff in response to our memorandum of 25 August 2015 addressing the Khayelitsha Commission of Inquiry’s findings and recommendations.
SAPS’ response acknowledged the “grievances” our memorandum had outlined without mentioning them or responding to their content. Instead the response stated that in order to address our demands the Minister was hosting consultative meetings with the different stakeholders in Khayelitsha. According to the letter these meetings will be aimed at “consulting with community leaders and stakeholders in order to ensure a comprehensive and integrated approach to policing in the country.”
The first of these consultative meetings that the SJC, NU and other complainant organisations behind the Commission of Inquiry have been invited to will be hosted on Saturday, 17 October 2015 at the Khayelitsha Stadium.
Our organisations will be marching to the event from Greenpoint Hall in Khayelitsha to the stadium to attend the meeting.
There has been more than a year of sustained attempts at meaningful engagement with the Minister. Our organisations are hopeful that the meeting will be a concrete first step from the SAPS at this level in implementing the Commission’s recommendations.
